The Hamlett/Hall House
2403 Ethel Avenue
Provident Heights Addition
Written by Bland Schwarting
It is my belief, and the opinion of others that this house was one of the first six houses Samuel Colcord built in Provident Heights, all on Ethel Avenue.
Although the original deed cannot be found, a Deed of Trust was found dated August 3, 1893 which would substantiate this being a Colcord house.
The first owner was Reverend J. H. Collard and his wife Laura. Collard was an evangelist with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The Deed of Trust was in the amount of 51 promissory notes totaling $3,650.00. Reverend Collard sold the house back to Samuel Colcord in September 1897. Samuel Colcord sold the house to Dr, Stephen Bedford Hamlett, a retired physician, in May, 1898 for $3,900.00. Dr. Hamlett died in 1908 leaving the house to his wife Johnny T Hamlett. Their daughter Bonniebel married Thomas Gladden Hall in 1913 and lived there with her mother. The ceremony was in the Hamlett House. Johhny T Hamlett died in 1934, leaving the house to Bonniebel and her husband. Bonniebel's husband, Thomas Gladdin Hall died in 1944, followed by Bonniebel in 1968. The house was left to her son Thomas Harrington Hall, who lived there until his death in 1987.
The house was originally a wood frame design highly ornamented in the Queen Anne Style. The Halls modernized the exterior look in 1921 by removing much of the elaborate details and having the house covered in stucco.
A fire in 1983, caused the rear upstairs bedroom to be removed.
The house went through several owners, including Liz Allen Myrick who purchased the home in 2013, and lovingly restored so much of the house including the stunning curved staircase. She sold the home in May 2021 to its current owners Brandon and Shannon Jackson.
